A Career in the Pipeline for Local Apprentice

11 July 2014

Rising star, Kyle Agnew (21) from East Belfast, reached the finals of the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ category at the 2014 Northern Ireland Plumbing and Heating awards held recently at the Hilton Hotel.

Kyle is employed by Phoenix Energy Services, who specialise in gas emergency response, gas boiler servicing & repair and asset maintenance.

The awards are judged by a panel of respected industry experts and are the only awards that collectively recognise the achievements of the plumbing and heating industry in the province.

Kyle is one of many apprentices who are striving towards building a lifelong career in the utilities sector. Duncan Whelan, Operations Manager at Phoenix Energy Services, commented:

"The delivery of an apprenticeship qualification requires direct teaching, employment, onsite training, and the commitment of the individual apprentices in order to make sure they achieve high standards and valuable transferable skills. We are delighted and proud that a member of our apprentice team has been highlighted as an example of excellence".

The Apprenticeships NI programme is delivered jointly by employers and training organisations. Phoenix is just one of many local organisations involved, but the gas company would be one of the bigger employers having taken on nearly fifty apprentices in a range of disciplines in the last number of years. Now that he has completed his apprenticeship Kyle will take up the full-time position of Emergency Service engineer with Phoenix Energy Services.
