North Belfast talent Josh Briers (15) is set for success after being selected to represent Ireland in the under 16ís European Basketball Championships this summer in Macedonia.

The tour costs are significant and each player must cover their own expenses to take part in the tournament including travel and accommodation. To help him meet these costs Josh successfully applied for a Phoenix Natural Gas Sports Bursary, which is open to high level athletes who represent their region or country competitively or have the potential to do so, whilst living in Northern Ireland.

Michael McKinstry, Finance Director of Phoenix Natural Gas said,

“As part of Phoenix’s commitment to developing local talent there are a number of sports bursaries available, which offer local athletes the opportunity to develop their sporting potential by providing them with funding that will enhance their ability to compete in their given sport at regional, national and international levels. We wish Josh every success in the upcoming tournament and for all his future endeavours.”

Josh is looking forward to the challenge of the European Basketball Championships, he reflected,

“I feel very proud and so privileged to be selected to play a game that I am passionate about for the All Ireland International Team. I am also very grateful to all of my coaches in the support they have given me to get me to my current level of skill and of course to Phoenix, without their financial support I wouldn’t be able to compete.”
